The Astronomical Clock in Prague, also known as the Prague Orloj, is a medieval clock located on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall in Prague's Old Town Square. First installed in 1410, it is one of the oldest and most famous astronomical clocks in the world still in operation.
Key Features:
- Astronomical Dial: Displays the positions of the sun, moon, zodiac constellations, and time in several formats.
- Calendar Dial: Shows the months of the year with medallions representing the zodiac signs.
- Apostles' Parade: Every hour between 9 AM and 11 PM, figures of the Twelve Apostles appear and rotate through two windows above the clock.
- Animated Figures: Includes symbolic characters like Death (a skeleton) ringing a bell, representing the inevitability of time, and figures symbolizing vanity, greed, and lust.
- Mechanics: The clock has been meticulously maintained and restored over the centuries, showcasing medieval engineering brilliance.
Historical Significance:
The Orloj reflects a blend of science, art, and spiritual symbolism, offering a unique glimpse into medieval cosmology and timekeeping. It has become a major tourist attraction and an iconic symbol of Prague’s cultural heritage.
Some of my photos show the crowds of tourists that assemble for the hourly "Apostles Parade" and this was on a cold December evening. I ask you to think about the size of the crowds on a summers day!!
