Recently renovated, the "Head of Franz Kafka" is an outdoor kinetic, (moving), sculpture located outside of Národní Třída Metro Station on the Prague Metro B line and next to the Quadrio Shopping Mall.
The statue or sculpture was created by artist David Černy and is not without controversy. Some critics have alleged that the sculpture lacks any connection to the work of Kafka and is an advertisement attracting visitors to the nearby Mall. Other critics maintain that the complexity of the sculpture and the changes as it rotates, captures Kafka's work quite well.
Whatever your own views on Kafka and his work, and the relevance of this sculpture, it is in my opinion certainly worth visiting.
The sculpture is 10.6 metres tall and consists of 42 rotating steel panels weighing 24 tons in total. The programming of the sculptures movements can be changed and new choreographies can be created.
Twice an hour the sculpture stops for 15 minutes, in perfect alignment, before it starts to rotate again for another 15 minutes.
