DATE: Late June 2024
COMMENTS: Well, after storms across Germany and other surrounding countries, as well as here in Czechia, it seems that summer has finally arrived. That is not to say that heavy rain and storms will not continue to occur, but let us for now say that we are enjoying a bit of summer!
As we all know, on summer days with temperatures of 30C+, cities can be very hot and steamy places. Around the centre of Prague you will find strategically placed water sprays, allowing you to walk through a fine spray of water to cool down, and at the end of Wenceslas Square, (the opposite end of the square from the National Museum), you will find water fountains which children, (or adults!), can enjoy and run through to cool down (please see the photos).
At various places within the city, and all across the central part of Prague, you will find many coffee shops and beverage outlets, (Starbucks and Costa Coffee in particular), where you can buy iced drinks, cold water etc.
If your sightseeing includes being out throughout the whole day, I recommend that between midday and 2.30pm, (often the hottest part of the day), if you aren't enjoying a lunch, you make your way down to the bank(s) of the Vltava river where you can then walk along the river path and I have always found this are to be a little bit cooler than within the cities. Alternatively, apart from the myriad of restaurants and other eateries, any one of a number of shopping malls located in Central Prague, will provide air-conditioned shelter combined with Food Courts or restaurants. I particularly recommend the following Malls:
- Palladium (extensive Food Court on the top floor)
- OC Nový Smichov (extensive Food Court on the top floor as well as other restaurants)
- OC Quadrio
- Slovanský dům (walking through this Mall will take you to a very lovely garden area where there are a number of restaurants)
- Arkády Pankrác (extensive Food Court on the top floor)
Finally, this week, the newest department store in Prague opened its doors again following an extensive re-furbishment. The store is called Máj Národní and a chandelier-covered food court and restaurants are located on Floor 2. Restaurants include the first Five Guys US burger franchise and the second Popeye’s US fried chicken franchise in the Czech Republic. There is also Mi Sushi, which advertises an à la carte/all-you-can-eat concept.
I recommend the site www.expats.cz (English speakers and readers), to keep up to date on all that is going on in Prague whilst you are visiting.
