COMMENTS: Driving into Prague through the Karlín District of Prague, you will pass an office building against which is placed a large metallic sculpture of what appears to be a naked lady. This sculpture is known as "The Amazon" or "The Biker."

The sculpture was created by David Černý, a renowned Czech sculptor known for his thought provoking and often controversial works. Černý's art frequently engages with social and political themes, and his sculptures are prominent in various locations around Prague. His most recent work of the Spitfire Butterflys can be seen on the side of the newly renovated Máj Department Store in central Prague.

Story and Significance

The Amazon was installed in 2012 on the façade of the administrative building at the corner of Křižíkova and Thámova streets in the Karlín district. The building itself is part of the Corso Karlín office complex, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill.

The sculpture depicts a naked woman riding a bicycle. Made of polished aluminum, the figure is depicted in an unusual and dynamic pose, seemingly climbing the side of the building. The choice of a naked woman riding a bicycle is both attention-grabbing and whimsical, characteristic of Černý's style.

The design plays with themes of freedom, movement, and the unconventional. The naked figure can be seen as a symbol of liberation and breaking free from societal norms, while the act of cycling represents motion and progress.

Like many of Černý's works, The Amazon has sparked discussions and varying interpretations among locals and visitors. Some view it as a piece of modern art that adds vibrancy and character to the urban landscape of Karlín, while others see it as provocative or controversial.

The sculpture has become a notable landmark in the district, contributing to Karlín's reputation as a hub for modern architecture and contemporary art.

Public reaction to The Amazon has been mixed, with some praising its creativity and daring, and others questioning its appropriateness and artistic value. Regardless of opinion, it has undeniably become a part of the cultural fabric of Karlín, drawing attention and curiosity from passersby.

Summary

The Amazon by David Černý is a distinctive sculpture in the Karlín district of Prague. It stands out for its boldness and the way it interacts with its urban surroundings. The sculpture continues to be a topic of conversation and a notable piece of public art, reflecting Černý's talent for creating works that challenge and engage the public.
